How To Backup Files Remotely When Operating System Can’t Load?

My Sony VAIO, after being dropped, is unable to load the operating system. If you have tips on fixing this, please do share.
However, my real question is, how do I backup that VAIO remotely? Or copy specific, important files? I have a 2nd computer and one of those USB-to-USB cords (however, the software that was included with it requires installation on both computers). Thanks.

Why Can’t I Play Dvd+rws In My Cd/dvd Drive?

I bought a 25 pack of blank DVD+RWs online to backup my data to, since my hard drive is about to fail, but my CD/DVD drive won’t accept them. The optical drive on my desktop won’t use the disks either, and I don’t know why. I thought my laptop drive would play any CD/DVD format, but apparently I was wrong.
My laptop optical drive:
SONY CD-RW CRX830E DVD/CR-ROM
Supports high speed reading/writing (16x)
My laptop:
HP Pavillion ze4805us notebook pc
60GB Hard Drive
192MB DDR RAM
2.1GHz AMD Athlon Processor
Windows XP Pro SP2
Can anyone tell me why my laptop won’t play these blank DVD+RWs, or what kind of DVD my laptop can accept that is also good for data backup?
